After Mapademics automatically extracts skills from your syllabi and job descriptions, you have complete control to review, edit, and manage those skills. This ensures your skills data is accurate and aligned with your educational and workforce goals.

Before You Start

  • Skills must be extracted from syllabi or job descriptions first (either manually added or AI-processed)
  • You’ll need appropriate permissions to edit course sections or job data
  • Consider reviewing the How Skills Extraction Works guide to understand AI-generated skills

Understanding Skill Sources

Skills in Mapademics come from two sources, each with distinct characteristics:

AI-Extracted Skills

Skills automatically detected from syllabi and job descriptions appear with:
  • Badge: “Syllabus” or “Job Description” badge with document icon
  • Rationale: Viewable explanation of why the AI identified this skill
  • Evidence: Specific text from the document supporting the skill identification

Manually Added Skills

Skills you add manually are marked with:
  • Badge: “Manual” badge with user icon
  • Full Control: No restrictions on editing or removal
  • Custom Levels: You set the proficiency level (1-5)

Reviewing Skills in Course Sections

Accessing Course Section Skills

  1. Navigate to Academic DataCourses
  2. Select the course containing your section
  3. Click on the specific course section you want to review
  4. The Skills section displays all current skills for that section

Understanding the Skills Display

Each skill row shows:
  • Source: Whether the skill came from AI processing or manual addition
  • Name: The skill name from the standardized skills library
  • Level: Proficiency level (1-5, with 5 being highest)
  • Rationale: For AI-extracted skills, click “View” to see the reasoning
  • Actions: Remove button to delete the skill

  2. Select the specific job you want to review
  3. The Job Skills card shows all current skills for that position

Job-Specific Considerations

Job skills work similarly to course section skills but with these differences:
  • Context: Skills represent job requirements rather than learning outcomes
  • Source Label: AI-extracted skills show “Job Description” instead of “Syllabus”
  • Processing: Use “Process Job Description” to trigger AI analysis of uploaded job descriptions

Reprocessing Content

When to Reprocess

Consider reprocessing syllabi or job descriptions when:
  • You’ve updated the content significantly
  • Initial processing missed important skills
  • You want to use updated AI models or processing settings

Triggering Reprocessing

  1. Ensure you have an uploaded syllabus or job description
  2. Click the “Process Syllabus” or “Process Job Description” button
  3. The system shows a processing indicator
  4. New skills are added while preserving your manual edits

Quality Control Best Practices

Regular Review Schedule

  • After Initial Processing: Review all AI-extracted skills for accuracy
  • Semester/Term Updates: Review when course content changes
  • Program Reviews: Ensure skills align with program learning outcomes
  • Industry Changes: Update job skills as industry demands evolve

Validation Checklist

When reviewing skills, consider:
  • Relevance: Does this skill actually relate to the course/job content?
  • Level Appropriateness: Is the proficiency level realistic for this context?
  • Completeness: Are there obvious skills missing that should be added?
  • Consistency: Do similar courses/jobs have consistent skill levels?

Working with Rationale Information

For AI-extracted skills:
  1. Click “View” in the Rationale column
  2. Read the specific evidence the AI found
  3. Evaluate whether the evidence supports the skill identification
  4. Keep skills with strong evidence, remove those with weak justification

Bulk Operations

Processing Multiple Sections

When working with courses that have multiple sections:
  • Each section maintains its own skills list
  • Default sections inherit from course-level data during migration
  • Use consistent skill levels across sections teaching the same content
  • Consider the instructor’s expertise when setting skill levels

Skills Library Management

The skills library contains standardized skills from occupational databases:
  • Search Function: Find skills by name or description
  • Category Browsing: Explore skills by occupational category
  • Skill Details: View descriptions to ensure appropriate selection
