What Instructor Reports Show You
Instructor Reports analyze skills at the instructor-course level, giving you insights into:- Skills coverage across all sections taught by a specific instructor
- Course-specific expertise and teaching strengths
- Proficiency levels delivered in each course section
- Teaching consistency within the same course taught by one instructor
- Skills gaps that may need curriculum or training support
Instructor Reports work with course sections that have processed syllabi. Skills are extracted from syllabus content using AI analysis, then mapped to standardized skill categories for each section the instructor teaches.
Before You Start
To generate meaningful instructor reports, you’ll need:- An instructor assigned to course sections in your system
- Processed syllabi for the sections taught by that instructor
- Skills data extracted from those syllabi through the processing system
If you don’t see skills data in your reports, make sure the instructor’s course sections have uploaded syllabi that have been processed through the skills extraction system.
Accessing Instructor Reports
1
Navigate to Reports
From your dashboard, click on Reports in the main navigation menu.
2
Select Instructor Reports Tab
Click on the Instructors tab to access instructor-level analysis tools.
3
Choose Your Instructor
Use the instructor dropdown to select the faculty member you want to analyze.
The dropdown will show all instructors who have been assigned to course sections in your organization.
4
Select Course to Analyze
After selecting an instructor, choose the specific course you want to analyze from the course dropdown.
The course dropdown will automatically filter to show only courses taught by the selected instructor.
5
View the Report
The Course Section Heat Map will automatically generate, showing how the instructor teaches skills across different sections of the selected course.
Understanding the Course Section Heat Map
The Course Section Heat Map is currently the primary visualization for instructor analysis. It provides a color-coded grid showing how consistently an instructor teaches skills across different sections of the same course.Reading the Heat Map
Color Coding System:- Red (Levels 1-2): Limited coverage of the skill in that section
- Orange (Level 3): Moderate coverage of the skill in that section
- Green (Levels 4-5): Extensive coverage of the skill in that section
- Gray: Skill not taught in that section
- Rows: Each row represents a different skill extracted from course syllabi
- Columns: Each column represents a different course section taught by the instructor
- Selected Instructor Highlighting: The selected instructor’s sections are highlighted with a light blue background to distinguish them from other instructors’ sections (if any)
- Section Names: Column headers show both instructor name and section name for clarity
Key Analysis Points
Teaching Consistency: Look for consistent color patterns across sections. Variations might indicate:- Different teaching approaches between semesters
- Curriculum changes over time
- Need for standardized teaching materials
- May indicate curriculum gaps
- Could suggest instructor training opportunities
- Might reveal outdated course descriptions
- Consistent high-level coverage (green) shows teaching strengths
- Mixed levels across sections may suggest inconsistent emphasis
- Low levels (red/orange) might indicate areas for curriculum enhancement
Analyzing Instructor Performance
Identifying Teaching Strengths
Use instructor reports to recognize excellence: Consistent High-Level Coverage:- Skills that consistently appear as green (levels 4-5) across sections
- Indicates instructor expertise and effective teaching methods
- Can be used for peer mentoring or professional development leadership
- Instructors covering many skills at moderate to high levels
- Shows breadth of knowledge and curriculum alignment
- Valuable for course scheduling and program coordination
Spotting Development Opportunities
Look for patterns that suggest growth areas: Inconsistent Coverage:- Same skills taught at different levels across sections
- May benefit from curriculum standardization support
- Could indicate need for teaching resources or training
- Important skills marked as gray (not taught) in multiple sections
- Compare with course learning objectives to identify discrepancies
- May require curriculum review or instructor development
- Skills consistently showing red/orange across sections
- Could indicate need for subject matter expertise development
- May suggest opportunities for targeted professional development
Comparing Instructor Approaches
When viewing courses with multiple instructors:Teaching Style Analysis
Coverage Breadth:- Compare how many skills each instructor covers
- Identify instructors who might benefit from curriculum guidance
- Recognize comprehensive teaching approaches
- Notice which instructors consistently deliver higher proficiency levels
- Identify potential mentors for other faculty
- Understand different teaching philosophies and their effectiveness
- See how different instructors interpret the same course requirements
- Identify opportunities for faculty collaboration
- Ensure consistent student experiences across sections
Using Reports for Faculty Development
Professional Development Planning
Individual Growth Plans:- Use skills gap analysis to create targeted development programs
- Identify subject areas where instructors need additional training
- Set measurable goals for skills coverage improvement
- Pair instructors with complementary strengths and development needs
- Use high-performing instructors as mentors for specific skill areas
- Create collaborative teaching opportunities
Curriculum Support
Resource Allocation:- Identify which courses or skills need additional teaching materials
- Determine where curriculum standardization would be most beneficial
- Plan professional development workshops based on common gaps
- Make informed decisions about instructor-course assignments
- Balance instructor strengths with course requirements
- Ensure adequate skills coverage across all program offerings
Troubleshooting Common Issues
No Skills Data Displayed
If your instructor report appears empty or shows no skills:- Verify Syllabus Upload: Ensure the instructor’s course sections have uploaded syllabi
- Check Processing Status: Confirm syllabi have been processed through the skills extraction system
- Review Instructor Assignments: Make sure the instructor is properly assigned to course sections
- Validate Course Sections: Ensure course sections exist and are properly configured
Incomplete Skills Coverage
If skills appear to be missing or limited:- Review Syllabus Content: Check that syllabi contain sufficient detail about skills and learning objectives
- Processing Quality: Consider reprocessing syllabi if they were processed with an older version of the skills extraction system
- Manual Review: Use the skills review system to add any skills that may have been missed by automated processing
Report Performance Issues
For slow-loading reports:- Course Selection: Start with smaller courses or fewer sections to test functionality
- Browser Performance: Clear browser cache and ensure you’re using a supported browser
- Data Volume: Large courses with many sections may take longer to process
Export functionality for instructor reports is currently under development. While you can view and analyze data in the interface, Excel export capabilities will be available in a future update.
